i was a fish in my past life;
so when moses parted the red sea i got stuck
on the other side.
was late to work,
and got fired.
so i crawled on the sand
earth
papatūānuku
and i found moses,
and i broke bread with him.
and when he passed
i became dinner
for those who wanted to feel holy
and now i was fried
fish
and chips on my whānau’s table
after bathing in a waterhole,
i’m pretty sure i saw the taniwha;
amongst brown bodies and rapid currents
cannibalistic kind of felt like i was eating the soul
of my past life,
as a fish.
swimming through the wai
waiting to part the sea like Moses.
